Hamas: Evil but not Stupid.

I'm very late in commenting about this, but let's just clear things up about Hamas' so-called terms for recognizing Israel in hopes of calming the international community and allow foreign aid to continue to flow.

"Let Israel say it will recognize a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders,"

So far so good right? Let's continue:

"release the prisoners"

Well...I'm not so sure Israel would be eager to release people who were guilty of killing its citizens, but let's be optimistic put this under "negotiable". But here's the killer:

and recognize the rights of the refugees to return to Israel.

And boom! Right there we have a problem, the current Palestinian refugees in some estimates number well over 2 million. Should they ever get "the right of return", the demographics in Israel would make it impossible to be sustained as a Jewish state. Israel from the get go stated that this is a non-starter, and will not even begin discussions of the refugees until all territorial disputes are solved. Even Mahmood Abbas recognized this as an impossibility, and shortly after being sworn in as President he entered negotiations with Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and the Gulf States in granting the refugees in those countries citizenship amnesty.

But that's not the end of it:

Hamas will have a position if this occurs," Haniyeh said.

So basicaly Israel must commit to evrey Hamas demand, and then Hamas will think about recognizing Israel. Notice also that there's no mention of rennouncing violence in among Hamas' "conditions". I'd be eager to know what the hell were the people who were calling for Harper and the West to recognize the election results think about the situation now.

The sad part is some countries are already taking this as a good sign and have continued their foreign aid. Which is exactly what Hamas intended to happen after this pathetic news release.

The PA was steeped in corruption and thuggery before, yet cash donations continued to flow. Hell, why stop now? The PA got the impression that no matter how much it ran its people to the ground, no one would care. That didn't teach them or the donors too much about responsible government.

Suha Arafat got something like 20 million USD when Arafat died. Surely that money could have been used to buy every Palestinian a nice villa in France.
